Why do women refuse polygamy?
by: Dr. Salwa Ahmad

Why does a woman in a Muslim country refuse to accept her husband taking on a second wife? Has polygamy – due to social factors like an increase in the percentage of women – become more acceptable to women in the Muslim world? Why is the percentage of polygamous marriages on the rise in some countries in the Muslim world and on the decline in others?

We will seek answers to these questions – looking particularly at Arab countries – by delving into the matter with a number of women who have had experience with polygamy, and we will try to determine current social attitudes towards the institution of polygamy in these countries and identify possible reasons that explain those attitudes.

`Izzah Husayn tells us: “I got married at the age of 18. I was at college studying literature. My father had treated his children very harshly, and my mother was always weak in front of my father’s decisions at home. These circumstances pushed me to make a bad choice in my first husband. I was carried away by emotions. He had dropped out of school after completing middle school. We were distantly related by blood.

“Though neither of my parents approved of this marriage, I was totally committed to him. Some of my brothers refused to attend our wedding or visit me thereafter.

“What matters is that after getting married, I suffered a lot because of that husband. He was very harsh towards me. He was stubborn about almost everything in our lives. I bore with a lot of his ways. My father had to provide partially for me and my children. What pained me the most after all that, and what caused me to leave him was that I learned he had gone behind my back and taken a second wife. I asked for a divorce, and I got one after a long and difficult ordeal.

“Taking care of three children on my own was very difficult. It was also hard to have to get divorced at the age of 35. I thought about getting married again to solve my problems –emotional as well as financial. However, I did not find anyone suitable who was not already married.

“I was forced to accept being a second wife, after experiencing the difficulty of being alone, especially since the man was well-off financially and promised to take care of my children. It pains me sometimes that his first wife knew nothing about our marriage. However, it seems that she is a peaceable gentlewoman who does not to make difficulties for people. This is from Allah’s grace upon us.”

He Married His Second Wife After He Got Rich

Al-Hâjjah Umm Khayrî is from Upper Egypt. She says: “I am a simple woman. I got married very young and gave birth to eight children. My husband was a construction worker who traveled to many Arab countries on account of his work. When Allah made him prosperous, he married another woman in Cairo. She was a divorcee with four children of her own. She was very different than me in her way of speaking, her clothing, and her lifestyle. My husband spent most of his time with her. He gave her children more care than gave our own. She received most of his money.

“As for us, we had to be content with little. I really had no choice in the matter. However, when my husband fell ill and he ceased having so much money, his second wife left him. She was not prepared to take care of him. I opened my door to him, and he is now dependent on the care of his wife and his children. Praise be to Allah. I have no regrets. I sincerely pray that he gets better.”

Clandestine Marriages
Lubnâ Sâlih says: “I was married to a doctor. He died unexpectedly while I was still in my prime and I was left to take care of three daughters on my own. I began to learn about my religion at that time and started to observe proper Islamic dress. I then received an offer of marriage from a man to become his second wife in secret, without his first wife knowing about it. I accepted this for a number of reasons.

“First, I wanted to protect myself from falling into sin. Then, I wanted this man to be like a father to my children, even if only part-time. I often do not see him for weeks at a time.

“The lack of equity in treatment does not bother me, since absolute equity is only possible when the first wife knows about what is going on and is understanding about it. Also, my husband’s children are not able to understand this situation. This is why I must put up with secrecy and an unequal share of his time. This is better that having to cope with anxiety and trouble. I wish to obey my husband and earn the blessings of making him pleased with me. Praise be to Allah, he is happy with me and finds happiness in the little bit of time that he is able to spend with me.”

Polygamy is on the Rise in Egypt

The Islamic preacher Amal Tawfîq is of the opinion that women in Egypt are not ready to accept polygamy. She says: “The Egyptian wife generally views her husbands as her personal property and her husband’s income as belonging exclusively to her and her children. I have observed in our social landscape a large number of polygamous marriages, but those marriages were kept secret in fear of the first wife’s reaction.

“The difficulty of polygamy, the social problems that result from the husband giving preference to one wife and her wishes to the detriment of the other, and his inability to treat his wives justly – these are all consequences of the clandestine nature of the second marriage. Anything that has to take place secretly is bound to be suspect in many ways.

“At the same time, a man today is faced with many problems on many different levels. He is unable to practice his rights, whether general or vocational, in our society. Because of this, he sometimes takes it out on his wives and treats them badly. A man in these circumstances often tends to show favoritism to one wife. This makes many women scared of polygamy.”

Dr. Salwâ Sâlih, a gynecologist, has this to say: “I have worked in the Gulf states for roughly ten years. In spite of the fact that polygamy is quite common there among traditional families, young women and the majority of young men in the Gulf – even in Saudi Arabia – do not accept polygamy like it was accepted in their mothers’ time. The primary reason for this change of attitude is the media. As for social causes, there have most certainly been many mistakes in husbands’ treating their wives unjustly. This has contributed to the decline in polygamy.

“In Egypt, on the other hand, I have observed that polygamy is on the rise in certain sectors. The large numbers of unmarried women and economic pressures compel many young women and even divorcees to accept being second wives in secret.”

Refusing to be a Second Wife

Hudâ Wasfî says: “I refuse to get into a polygamous marriage, since women are not prepared to put it into practice. Some women accept polygamy on a theoretical level, but when it comes to actually living in a polygamous marriage, the first wife will do everything in her power to fight the second marriage. I refuse to live with all that enmity and hatred.”

Salwâ al-Sanâdîlî says: “I refuse to accept a polygamous marriage, because what I will not accept for myself I would not impose upon someone else.”

Fathîyyah Jamâl, an engineer, says: “I refuse to get into a polygamous marriage, because I have never seen any example of a man who can even show justice between his children. There are still too many fathers – and even mothers – who treat their sons better than their daughters. How can you expect such men to show equal treatment to more than one wife?”

Munâ Hâmid says: “I refuse polygamy, because most of the time it is the first wife who has to make all the sacrifices. She has to live through the difficult times under tight economic circumstances. She has to make a lot of sacrifices during the early years of marriage. Then when the husband becomes financially secure and has a stable family life, he goes and marries another woman who can reap what the first wife has sown. This is not fair.”

The Need of the Woman is the Determining Factor

We spoke to Dr. Ilhâm Faraj, a professor of Sociology. She said: “Polygamy is not determined by law or by the support of the media as much as it is a consequence of necessity. A woman might be forced to accept it because of difficult circumstances. Many young women might regard being a second wife better than remaining single. In the long run, it is usually the second wife who is accepting of polygamy. The difficulty is usually with the first wife. Sometimes the first wifeis forced to accept it because of her own limited circumstances, and sometimes she declares war or leaves her husband.”

Dr. Ra’fat `Uthmân, a professor of Islamic Law, holds a different view. He says: “Justice between wives is the legal foundation of polygamy. It is not up to the first wife to accept the second marriage or reject it. Being just is the responsibility of the husband. It is not something simple or easy to achieve. It takes a lot of effort. Polygamy, for the most part, is for the woman’s benefit. It is a legal, financial, and emotional responsibility for the man.”

Think your smart! It can be a noble to change your mind
by Sheikh Salman Al Dadah

It is a well-known fact that any approach to knowledge that does not have within it a means for re-evaluation, correction, and reform is destined to not only perpetuate errors but will also engender bigotry.

If we look at the qualities of the greatest scholars and thinkers, we find that they had the presence of mind to reconsider their opinions at all times and revise them when necessary.

This is why we see that al-Shāfi`ī had and “old” school” and “new school”. He developed what is referred to as his “old school” while he was living in Iraq. Then, after moving to Egypt, he reassessed all of his views and methodological assumptions and revised almost every opinion that he had. In this way, he developed what would come to be known as his “new school”.

Not only had his knowledge and understanding grown deeper, but he was also more experienced and had a greater perception of life. The experience of living in a new culture heightened his sensitivity to people’s varying needs, circumstances, and customs. He had grown older and his thought had become more mature. He was more secure and did not have to worry about his reputation, nor about what he would to say to those who had learned from him his earlier views.

Al-Shāfi`ī was not alone in this. For all the great scholars, we find numerous issues where two or more opinions have been related from them.

Abū Yūsuf said: “I have never expressed an opinion that differs from Abū Hanīfah’s except that it was an earlier opinion of his that he later discarded.” Here we have a situation where Abū Hanīfah changed his mind about some issues. But we also see that his student was willing to differ with him on many of his teachers opinions while following his teacher’s principles. When he did so, he found that that he was in agreement with earlier opinions his teacher had expressed.

For Mālik, over 70,000 of his legal opinions were transmitted by his students who went to Iraq. However, due to Mālik’s habit of revising his opinions, this led to a serious amount of differences between what would later develop into the Iraqi and Western branches the Mālikī school.

Likewise, the later scholars of the Hanbalī school had to develop a complex set of terminology to negotiate all of the different and conflicting opinions that were narrated from Ahmad b. Hanbal and his senior students. These were ultimately compiled by Abū Ya`la al-Farrā’ in his book Narrations and Viewpoints. The Hanbalī schools was enriched by the various perspectives it contained on legal issues, since it is the nature of the finer points of Islamic Law to accommodate such a scope of opinion.

It takes a strong, sincere heart to abandon one’s own opinion and adopt that of one’s critic. When one is truly seeking Allah’s pleasure and His grace in the Hereafter, it becomes much easier. The four imams were certainly of that calibre.

They did not give in to the pressures of their followers. They did not become sensitive to the personality disputes that inevitably come from living in the public eye. They did not cause division by demanding that their students follow them to the exclusion of others, and they never abided that anyone insult those who disagreed with them. Their students and the large following they had were naturally a source of great social pressure on them, however they did not let this affect them. They kept themselves intellectually and emotionally independent of their followers, while always treating them with respect and consideration.

The imams, during their careers, were first subjected to political persecution. They were each put under great pressure to comply with the state’s wishes in their teachings and conduct. We can all see how this was a great trial. What we often forget is that the popularity they gained thereafter was an equally difficult trial.

When someone has fame and a large following, it is easy to fall into the trap of becoming a follower in the guise of a leader. The power of popular opinion is no less dreadful than that of the state. There is pressure to maintain appearances. There are pressures to hold one’s own against one’s peers and supposed rivals. Everyone is watching.

However, the imams did not gain their reputations with the people through flattery or through indulging their wishes. In fact, they openly avoided a sector of the population, this who wasted their time in useless debate, who were not an insubstantial group among the people associated with religious knowledge.

Whenever scholars, thinkers, and intellectuals become enamoured of those around them, they get distracted from those who are sincere by other people of meaner temperaments. Indeed those people distract them form their own thoughts. They to measure their words, consider what to say and what not to say. They have to be careful not to cause division and dissention, or bring about confusion.

At the same time, they have to maintain a good connection with the public, to be aware of their concerns and to keep abreast of developments in society that need to be addressed. A careful balance must always be maintained between intellectual independence on the one hand, and public engagement on the other.

You cannot simply cut yourself off from the people if your opinions are to have any value. This is why it is a sign of utmost nobility to be able to admit you are wrong and publicly change your mind. It is not an easy thing to do.

Prayers for Those Who Disbelieve

Our prayers for those who......
by: Sheikh Sâlih al-Zahrânî

Muslim may certainly beseech Allah in their prayers for the benefit of non-Muslims. There can be no question that we should beseech Allah to guide them to faith.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “O Lord, support Islam by the most beloved `Umar to you.” This is a supplication for guidance for one of the two persons named `Umar to accept Islam. This took place just before `Umar b. al-Khattâb embraced Islam.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said in another hadîth: “O Lord guide my people, they do not know (the true path)”

There is only one matter that we are not supposed to beseech on their behalf – that is for Allah to forgive them while they remain upon unbelief.

This prohibition is established by the following verse of the Qur’ān: Allah says: “It is not fitting for the Prophet and those who believe, that they should pray for forgiveness for the polytheists, even though they be of kin, after it is clear to them that they are companions of the Fire.” [Sûrah al-Tawbah: 113]

This verse was revealed on a particular occasion. The Prophet’s beloved uncle, Abû Tâlib, was dying and he had not accepted Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) pleaded with his uncle to accept Islam on his deathbed. To the Prophet’s dismay, Abû Tâlib refused to do so. Nevertheless, the Prophet (peace be upon him) promised his uncle: “I will beseech Allah’s forgiveness for you as long as Allah does not forbid me to do so.” It was after this that the above verse was revealed. [Sahîh al-Bukhârî]

We also have where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I asked Allah to permit me to visit my mother’s grave, and He granted me permission to do so. Then I asked Him to permit me to beseech His forgiveness for her, but He did not permit me to do so.” [Musnad Ahmad]

As for our supplications for non-Muslims regarding worldly matters – like prosperity, health, recovery from illness, and other concerns – this is a virtuous act for the Muslim. Indeed, it is most emphatically encouraged where the non-Muslim happens to be a close relative, and especially when that person is a parent.

We would say that as long as the non-Muslim is not at war with the Muslims or actively engaged in bringing harm to the Muslims, we may beseech Allah for that person’s success and welfare in this world. This comes under the general meaning of the following verse where Allah says: “With respect to those who neither fight you on account of your faith nor drive you form your homes, Allah does not prevent you from doing good for them and treating them equitably. Indeed, Allah loves those who behave equitably.” [Sûrah al-Mumtahanah: 8]

When a non-Muslim is ill or in need, our supplicating on his or her behalf is a way of doing good for that person. It is a noble act. It is a virtuous deed, just like lending that person a helping hand or fulfilling that person’s material needs are virtuous acts.

In the same way, the jurists have agreed that we can console non-Muslims on the death of their loved-ones by beseeching Allah to bless the believed with patience and with good in this world. However, we are not supposed to beseech Allah’s spiritual rewards upon them or for the deceased as long as the people concerned are unbelievers.

Regarding supplications on behalf of non-Muslims for healing and recovery, we have the following account related in Sahîh al-Bukhârâ and Sahîh Muslim:
Once some of the Prophet’s Companions, Abû Sa`îd al-Khudrî among them, approached an Arab township and requested from them the hospitality that was then the custom. The people of the town refused them hospitality. The Companions had to make camp outside of the town’s limits. While they were in these circumstances, the village chief was stung by a scorpion, and the townspeople approached the Companions, asking: “Do you have any medicine or healing incantation for our chief?”

The Companions replied: “Since you refused us even the most basic hospitality, we will do nothing for you without payment.” The townspeople agreed to pay them a certain number of sheep if their chief recovered from the bite.

The Companions then began to recite Sûrah al-Fâtihah over the wounded man, blowing over his wound. The chief was relieved of his pain and gave them the sheep they were promised.

The Companions were unsure of whether they should profit from a supplication and they said: “We will not take this wage until we first ask the Prophet (peace be upon him) about it. When they told him what happened, he laughed and said: “How did you come to know that (Sûrah al-Fâtihah) is a prayer for healing? Take the sheep and allow me to share with you in them.
The Companions recited the Qur’ān as a supplication to Allah to heal the chief of that township. This shows that it is permissible to beseech Allah to cure a non-Muslims illness.

Of course, someone might argue that nowhere in the account does it mention that the people of that town were non-Muslims, though the context strongly indicates that they were non-Muslims. Still, the general permission and encouragement to showing kindness and doing good for all people, like we have in the verse mentioned above, is sufficient to establish the permissibility of beseeching Allah in prayer for the welfare of others, regardless of their faith.

And Allah knows best.

Allah: Al Haqq is the Truth

The Quran attributes this name to Allah ten times. For example: "On that day Allah will pay them in full their  just reward, and they shall know that Allah is the Evident Truth.” [Sūrah al-Nūr: 25]

And: “Then they shall be sent back to Allah, their Patron, the True One.” [Sūrah al-An`ām: 62]

And : “So exalted be Allah, the True King!” [Sūrah TāHā: 114]

And: “So that is your Lord in Truth” [Sūrah Yūnus: 32]

It follows that Allah loves the truth and those who are truthful. He enjoins honesty upon us and exhorts us be honest.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say while standing late at night in the observance of prayer:
O Allah! You set to rights the heavens and the Earth and all they contain, and Yours is the praise. Yours is the dominion of the heavens and the Earth and all they contain, and Yours is the praise. You are the light of the heavens and the Earth and all they contain, and Yours is the praise. You are the King of the heavens and the Earth and all they contain, and Yours is the praise. You are the Truth, Your promise is true, the meeting with You is true, Heaven is true, Hell is true, the prophets are true, Muhammad is true, and the Final Hour is true.[Sahīh al-Bukhārī (1120, 6317) and Sahīh Muslim (769)]
The truth can be defined as that which is established with certainty about which there can be no legitimate doubt. Allah is the Truth in His enduring essence which shall never perish or diminish. His nature is the truth that shall never be supplanted. Hs teachings are the truth, never mixed with falsehood. His promise is true and it will never be broken. He guides us to the truth, decrees the truth, and speaks the truth.

No matter what changes may take place in the world, no matter what challenges, difficulties, or discoveries we might encounter, the Truth that is Allah will never change. It is the one thing that can always be relied upon.

Muslims today, in the age of Globalization, are wondering what principles are immutable and what principles are subject to adaptation and change. Understanding this name of Allah should help us to deal with this question. Allah’s light is the truth, and whatever is illuminated by His light will be true.

by: Sheikh Salman al-Oadah

Reliance on Allah, as mentioned in this Prophetic statement, is referred to in Arabic as tawakkul. It literally means to place one’s affairs in the hands of another.

There is a name of Allah associated with this word: al-Wakīl (the Disposer of Affairs). The Qur’ān refers to Allah by this name fourteen times.

For instance, it says: “Say: Allah is sufficient for us! Most Excellent is He in whom we trust as Disposer of our Affairs!” [Sūrah Āl `Imrān: 173]

Also: “Allah is sufficient as Disposer of Affairs.” [Sūrah al-Nisā’: 81]

And: “He is the Disposer of All Affairs” [Sūrah al-An`ām: 102]

And: “As to what we say, Allah is the Disposer of Affairs.” [Sūrah al-Qasas: 28]

Allah, in His infinite knowledge, power and wisdom, governs the affairs of all aspects of His creation. Allah’s care is general for all things, living and nonliving, believer and unbeliever, the pious and the heedless, the grateful and the ungrateful. Allah’s concern, care, and mercy embraces all creation and all people, whether or not they believe in Him and whether or not they place their trust in Him.

There is, however, a special sense of this name, a sense that applies to those who believe in Him firmly and place their trust fully in Him. Allah makes matters easy for them and wards off hardship from them.

This is what the eminent Companion, IBn `Abbās was referring to when he said:
Allah is sufficient for us. Most Excellent is He in whom we trust as Disposer of our Affairs! This is what Abraham (peace be upon him) said when he was cast into the bonfire. It is also what Muhammad (peace be upon him) said when the people said: “’They have gathered against you, so fear them.’ However, it only increased the believers in faith, and they said: ‘Say: Allah is Sufficient for us! Most Excellent is He in whom we trust as Disposer of our affairs!’” [Sūrah Āl `Imrān: 173]
Allah takes particular care of the believers, their well-being and their sustenance. He shows particular concern for their affairs, especially those who put their full trust in Him. Allah says: “And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him.” [Sūrah al-Talāq: 3]

When we have a proper awareness that Allah is the Disposer of Affairs, we entrust our Lord with our concerns. We become accepting of His decree and seek after His bounty and grace.

This is what Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was referring to when he said: “If they would only put their trust in Allah as they should, He would provide for them like he provides for the birds who fly out in the morning hungry and return fully satiated.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhī (2344) and Sunan Ibn Mājah (4164)]

The example of the bird going out in the morning shows us that one of the greatest expressions of faith and devotion is to take all practical steps to achieve our goals while at the same time placing our complete reliance upon Allah for the outcome.

Allah enjoins this upon us, saying: “(He is) Lord of the East and the West. There is no god but He. Take Him therefore as Disposer of your Affairs.” [Sūrah al-Muzammil: 9]

Likewise, Allah forbids us to place our true reliance in anything other than Him: “We gave Moses the Book, and made it a Guide to the Children of Israel, (commanding): ‘Take not other than Me as Disposer of (your) affairs’.” [Sūrah al-Isrā’: 2]

Together, these two verses show us that putting our trust in Allah is an act of worship. Through our devoted trust and reliance, we express our monotheistic belief, and therefore these are things we should direct towards Allah alone.

Surah Al Maidah

Sura Al-Ma'ida (Arabic: سورة المائدة‎, Sūratu al-Mā'idah, "The Table" or "The Table Spread with Food") is the fifth chapter of the Qur'an, with 120 verses. It is a Madinan sura. The sura's main topics are Isa (Jesus') and Musa's (Moses) missions, as well as the claim that their messages are distorted by non-believing Jews and Christians.

It begins by specifying which animals are forbidden and which are permissible to consume. These are verse 1 and verse 3.
(1) O ye who believe! fulfil (all) obligations. Lawful unto you (for food) are all four-footed animals, with the exceptions named: But animals of the chase are forbidden while ye are in the sacred precincts or in pilgrim garb: for Allah doth command according to His will and plan.
(3) Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah. that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, Allah is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

5:110
Sahih International
[The Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother when I supported you with the Pure Spirit and you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and [remember] when I taught you writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and when you designed from clay [what was] like the form of a bird with My permission, then you breathed into it, and it became a bird with My permission; and you healed the blind and the leper with My permission; and when you brought forth the dead with My permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from [killing] you when you came to them with clear proofs and those who disbelieved among them said, "This is not but obvious magic."

The Quran, chapter 5 (Al-Ma'ida), verse 36:
As to those who reject Faith,- if they had everything on earth, and twice repeated, to give as ransom for the penalty of the Day of Judgment, it would never be accepted of them, theirs would be a grievous penalty.— translated by Unknown

Surat Ar-Ra'd: The Miracle of Surat Ar-Ra'd

Sura Ar-Ra'd (Arabic: سورة الرعد, Sūratu ar-Ra'd, "The Thunder") is the 13th sura of the Qur'an with 43 ayat. It is a Madinan sura. هُوَ الَّذِي يُرِيكُمُ الْبَرْقَ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا وَيُنْشِىءُ السَّحَابَ الثِّقَالَ
13:12 He is the One Who keeps visually showing to you people the lightening, causing a state of fear and generating hope of profitability. [release of atmospheric nitrogen brought down by rain-sustenance 45:05]. And He gradually and successively raises the [middle] drifting/trailing heavy laden clouds. [13:12]
The information is that the effect of lightening, in addition to causing mind to perceive threat, also generates a ray of hope of profitability. The statement was a fact for those who listened or read the Qur'an hundreds of years back and is a fact when we read it today after having known effect of lightening in the atmosphere which causes descending of "sustenance and food" for the "demised Earth-lost the salient feature of life-production". Grand Qur'an informs: and that from sustenance/food which Allah has descended from the Sky thereby He rejuvenated the Earth, after its "demise", with this sustenance/food ; [Refer 45:05] [For detailed study please refer 1-Surat Fateh "Word by Word Analysis"]

He arranges [each] matter; He details the signs that you may, of the meeting with your Lord, be certain. (2) And it is He who spread the earth and placed therein firmly set mountains and rivers; and from all of the fruits He made therein two mates; He causes the night to cover the day. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron.
13:12
Sahih International
It is He who shows you lightening, [causing] fear and aspiration, and generates the heavy clouds.
13:13
Sahih International
And the thunder exalts [ Allah ] with praise of Him - and the angels [as well] from fear of Him - and He sends thunderbolts and strikes therewith whom He wills while they dispute about Allah ; and He is severe in assault.
13:14
Sahih International
To Him [alone] is the supplication of truth. And those they call upon besides Him do not respond to them with a thing, except as one who stretches his hands toward water [from afar, calling it] to reach his mouth, but it will not reach it [thus]. And the supplication of the disbelievers is not but in error [i.e. futility].
13:15
Sahih International
And to Allah prostrates whoever is within the heavens and the earth, willingly or by compulsion, and their shadows [as well] in the mornings and the afternoons.
13:16
Sahih International
Say, "Who is Lord of the heavens and earth?" Say, " Allah ." Say, "Have you then taken besides Him allies not possessing [even] for themselves any benefit or any harm?" Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Or is darkness equivalent to light? Or have they attributed to Allah partners who created like His creation so that the creation [of each] seemed similar to them?" Say, " Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the Prevailing."
13:17
Sahih International
He sends down from the sky, rain, and valleys flow according to their capacity, and the torrent carries a rising foam. And from that [ore] which they heat in the fire, desiring adornments and utensils, is a foam like it. Thus Allah presents [the example of] truth and falsehood. As for the foam, it vanishes, [being] cast off; but as for that which benefits the people, it remains on the earth. Thus does Allah present examples.
13:18
Sahih International
For those who have responded to their Lord is the best [reward], but those who did not respond to Him - if they had all that is in the earth entirely and the like of it with it, they would [attempt to] ransom themselves thereby. Those will have the worst account, and their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the resting place.
13:19
Sahih International
Then is he who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth like one who is blind? They will only be reminded who are people of understanding -
13:20
Sahih International
Those who fulfill the covenant of Allah and do not break the contract,
13:21
Sahih International
And those who join that which Allah has ordered to be joined and fear their Lord and are afraid of the evil of [their] account,
13:22
Sahih International
And those who are patient, seeking the countenance of their Lord, and establish prayer and spend from what We have provided for them secretly and publicly and prevent evil with good - those will have the good consequence of [this] home -
13:23
Sahih International
Gardens of perpetual residence; they will enter them with whoever were righteous among their fathers, their spouses and their descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, [saying],
13:24
Sahih International
"Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home."
13:25
Sahih International
But those who break the covenant of Allah after contracting it and sever that which Allah has ordered to be joined and spread corruption on earth - for them is the curse, and they will have the worst home.
13:26
Sahih International
Allah extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. And they rejoice in the worldly life, while the worldly life is not, compared to the Hereafter, except [brief] enjoyment.
13:27
Sahih International
And those who disbelieved say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, Allah leaves astray whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him] -
13:28
Sahih International
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."
13:29
Sahih International
Those who have believed and done righteous deeds - a good state is theirs and a good return.
13:30
Sahih International
Thus have We sent you to a community before which [other] communities have passed on so you might recite to them that which We revealed to you, while they disbelieve in the Most Merciful. Say, "He is my Lord; there is no deity except Him. Upon Him I rely, and to Him is my return."
13:31
Sahih International
And if there was any qur'an by which the mountains would be removed or the earth would be broken apart or the dead would be made to speak, [it would be this Qur'an], but to Allah belongs the affair entirely. Then have those who believed not accepted that had Allah willed, He would have guided the people, all of them? And those who disbelieve do not cease to be struck, for what they have done, by calamity - or it will descend near their home - until there comes the promise of Allah . Indeed, Allah does not fail in [His] promise.
13:32
Sahih International
And already were [other] messengers ridiculed before you, and I extended the time of those who disbelieved; then I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty.
13:33
Sahih International
Then is He who is a maintainer of every soul, [knowing] what it has earned, [like any other]? But to Allah they have attributed partners. Say, "Name them. Or do you inform Him of that which He knows not upon the earth or of what is apparent of speech?" Rather, their [own] plan has been made attractive to those who disbelieve, and they have been averted from the way. And whomever Allah leaves astray - there will be for him no guide.
13:34
Sahih International
For them will be punishment in the life of [this] world, and the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe. And they will not have from Allah any protector.
13:35
Sahih International
The example of Paradise, which the righteous have been promised, is [that] beneath it rivers flow. Its fruit is lasting, and its shade. That is the consequence for the righteous, and the consequence for the disbelievers is the Fire.
13:36
Sahih International
And [the believers among] those to whom We have given the [previous] Scripture rejoice at what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], but among the [opposing] factions are those who deny part of it. Say, "I have only been commanded to worship Allah and not associate [anything] with Him. To Him I invite, and to Him is my return."
13:37
Sahih International
And thus We have revealed it as an Arabic legislation. And if you should follow their inclinations after what has come to you of knowledge, you would not have against Allah any ally or any protector.
13:38
Sahih International
And We have already sent messengers before you and assigned to them wives and descendants. And it was not for a messenger to come with a sign except by permission of Allah . For every term is a decree.
13:39
Sahih International
Allah eliminates what He wills or confirms, and with Him is the Mother of the Book.
13:40
Sahih International
And whether We show you part of what We promise them or take you in death, upon you is only the [duty of] notification, and upon Us is the account.
13:41
Sahih International
Have they not seen that We set upon the land, reducing it from its borders? And Allah decides; there is no adjuster of His decision. And He is swift in account.
13:42
Sahih International
And those before them had plotted, but to Allah belongs the plan entirely. He knows what every soul earns, and the disbelievers will know for whom is the final home.
13:43
Sahih International
And those who have disbelieved say, "You are not a messenger." Say, [O Muhammad], "Sufficient is Allah as Witness between me and you, and [the witness of] whoever has knowledge of the Scripture."

Heather Mattews: The party girl who embrace a new life as a convert Islam

New faith: Heather Matthews, with daughters Ellah, 5, and Halle, 2, converted to Islam four weeks ago
Her conversion from Ibiza party girl to hijab-wearing Muslim in barely three months may well raise a few eyebrows – and she admits that her friends probably think it’s another one of her fads.
But trainee teacher Heather Matthews, 27, says Islam has brought her ‘love and happiness’ that she never found in her old ‘shallow’ lifestyle.
Mrs Matthews, a mother of two, converted to the faith four weeks ago – two months after returning from a holiday in Ibiza. And she says that the photographs of the ‘old her’ taken on that trip show all that is wrong with Western images of beauty.

She said: ‘I thought I needed to act and dress in a certain way to feel good about myself. I see girls now and think about what image they are portraying to other people, especially men.
‘It is about self-respect. If you dress and act in a certain way, rightly or wrongly, you’ll be treated in a certain way.
‘Islam has taught me about real love, not false passion and lust. I can even see the logic in arranged marriage.’

A study by multi-faith group Faith Matters found the number of Muslim converts in Britain has now passed 100,000, doubling in ten years.
The report estimated nearly two-thirds of the new converts were women, with an average age of 27 – like Mrs Matthews.

Her path to conversion began when she tried to convince her ex-husband Jerrome, himself a Muslim convert, that the religion was wrong. She was ‘very suspicious’ of the faith, and began reading up on it to support her arguments.

Although they separated last year, she continued to learn about Islam – and identified with it more and more. Then, four weeks ago, she completed the ‘revert’ process. She said: ‘I underwent the ‘Shahadah’ ceremony of conversion to Islam by repeating a declaration of faith in front of the Imam at my local multi-faith centre.
‘I had several Muslim sisters with me and they bought me a hijab and Islamic books to celebrate. It was wonderful.’
Before Islam: This picture of Heather taken earlier this year on the party island of Ibiza, which she now ways shows everything that is wrong about Western beauty

But she admits that her friends have been shocked at her conversion to a religion which is often seen as being oppressive towards women.
‘People are probably thinking “Oh, it is just another one of Heather’s fads”. It isn’t. It is what I’ve been searching for during the times I’ve been filling my life with instant gratification,’ she said.
Mrs Matthews, from Preston, has also had a cautious reaction from her family. But it is the response from passers-by that surprised her the most – especially the effect of her headscarf.
‘No men try to chat me up. It is an idiot repellent. When I’m wearing the headscarf I can smile at people without them thinking it is a sexual advance,’ she said.
‘I definitely agree with Islam’s principles of not having sex with someone you’re not married to and to save your beauty for your husband. So I think my next partner would need to be a practising Muslim to understand.

‘It is easy for me to say this now, with hindsight, having made the mistakes, but I think I would have been better off with partners who my parents thought were suitable, learning to love them through friendship first.’ Mrs Matthews has given up alcohol, sticks to a halal diet and plans to fast during Ramadan. She has an English-language Koran which she reads daily, and wants to learn Arabic so that she can recite prayers five times a day. But she will not be forcing Islam on to her daughters – Ellah, five, and two-year-old Halle – from her marriage to Jerrome. ‘People think I must be oppressed but I’m a strong, confident and free woman,’ she said. ‘I know I’m one of the most unlikely people to revert to Islam. ‘It astounds me. But I’ve done it for love and happiness and it has completely changed my life.’

Dr. Maurice Bucaille is a surgeon by profession. He is also a renowned scholar. In order to be able to read Quran in its original text and to study its meaning and purport through direct access to its early and modern commentaries, he devoted himself to the learning of Arabic language at the ripe age of fifty. Thereafter, he made a beginning by trying to reconcile proven scientific truths with religious axioms. As a result of these studies, he wrote his famous book "QURAN, BIBLE AND SCIENCE" in 1976, which caused a furor in high academic circles - particularly in the Christian world.

After a deeper study of Islam and the Quran, he has authored another book titled, "THE ORIGIN OF MAN". It comprised Quranic explanations of some of the queries raised much earlier than the period when those queries were logically and satisfactorily resolved by scientific experimentation, to be fully in conformity with the explanations provided by Quran about 1500 years before. The Church acknowledged and accepted these researches of Dr. Bucaille to be a valuable contribution to human knowledge and the author became famous all over the world, like Cambridge, and Oxford Universities in U.K. & Yale and Harvard in USA. He was invited to give Extension Lectures in their academic institutions. By dint of his Quranic thought, and by virtue of his unprejudiced and realistic approach to Quranic thought, and by virtue of his unprejudiced and realistic discussion and research work, Dr. Bucaille has converted a number of high ranking scholars to agree with him and to subscribe to his view that the Quran is a Divine Book, not authored by any human being and actually a Book of Revelations from Almighty God to His Last Prophet, Mohammed, Peace Be Upon Him.

M. Bucaille is of the view that his findings in this behalf are a cause of consternation and chagrin to Western scholars because of their earlier exposure to false and fictitious propaganda against Islam and its Prophet (S.A.W.), by the Christian clergy and by biased Western writers and authors. This misguided class of people could not believe that Quran was the only Scripture which had remained sacrosanct and free from all additions, alterations and interpolations and consequently it still retained the purity to guide mankind in all ages, places and in every conceivable crisis.

For over 1400 years it has been the only treasure house of ecclesiastical and cosmic knowledge about the universe and life itself. Mankind has not yet to progress and proceed to a stage where it can fully be au fait with all the pearls and gems of wisdom and truth, garnered in its bosom by this miracle of literacy, excellence and academic purity which could not be matched even in one small sentence by the literary giants of yore, in spite of an open challenge to this effect.

Q: What urged you so forcefully to undertake a study of the Quran and other scriptures, and why?

A: Like all other Frenchmen, I was also initially of the view that Islam was a religion conceived and introduced by a genius and a remarkable man of great intellect, known by the name of Mohammed (S.A.W.). Fifty years ago, by the Grace of God, I became professionally qualified to practice as a surgeon, and used to discuss and compare (views on) Islam and Christianity with my patients who came to consult me (and with my co-professionals). I was told by some of them that my knowledge of Islam and about its discipline was to a great extent misconceived and mistaken. In the beginning I was inclined to doubt them, but now and then some people produced actual and original Quranic Verses in contradiction of my references, and I was compelled to revise my conclusions. And, as a result of this revision and review, I felt that they were right and I was wrong.
I found that those who had been my teachers had a wrong approach to the problem and had imparted incorrect information to me. My knowledge of Islam, until then, had been restricted to Radio and T.V. reviews, articles published in various magazines and reproduced in biased treatise books. But I was perplexed; what should I do? How should I amend my position and rectify my understanding?

Q: When did this happen?

A: After the 8th Vatican Conference but before the birth of a tolerant attitude on the part of European scholars gravitating to unbiased thought, i.e. before 1926, when the cleavage between Muslims and Christian scholars was at its zenith and there was no prospect of a direct dialogue between them.

Q: How did you react to this situation?

A: There was only one road open to me then, that of learning Arabic language so that I could study the Holy Book, Quran, in its original form and try to get at its meaning directly. I devoted the next two years to this task when I had acquired enough knowledge of Arabic (in language and literature) to be able to make a dependable study of the Quran faithfully as well as academically.

Q: And how did this benefit you?

A: I knew then that the Quran was the "Work of Allah" and had not been authored by any human being. I was also convinced that Mohammed (S.A.W.) was a true Prophet of God.

Q: The world is now celebrating the first centenary of Darwin, do you subscribe to Darwinian theory or disagree with it?

A: No Sir, I oppose it vehemently. Darwin's theory is totally based on a misconception and is not at all the outcome of such a scientific research as could prove that there exists the slightest relation between man and the theory of evolution of species as propounded by him. In fact his views are nothing but the misguided and misconceived calculations of a purely materialistic mind. My latest book (Origin of Man) contains a comprehensive "Rebuttal Article" on Darwin and his views.

Q: Are you of the opinion that Darwin was aware of his error?

A: Yes, I think he knew the error he committed. The scholars, who are fond of materialism, have propounded innumerable theories, mostly incorrect, and the fun of it is that they are aware of their fallacies. However, being materialist, they stick to their wrong attitude. In my book I have criticized some of these scholars, several of whom are Nobel Prize winners.

Q: Do you think your writings have had direct repercussion on people outside France?

A: Yes, Recently, only a few days ago, I visited Northern and Western African countries, where I was repeatedly called upon to address innumerable gatherings of educated persons including scholars, on the Origin of Man and about my first book: the Quran, Bible and Science. I was closely cross- examined about my views by some of the most qualified, even hostile, elements. Following this, countless students and scholars contacted and congratulated me. They declared that after listening to me, they had, for the first time, been able to feel convinced of the truth of the Quranic statements about the creation of universe and origin of man. Some of them frankly admitted that my writings and lectures had restored in them a firm certainty of belief and faith and converted them into True Muslims, who actually felt solace and pleasure now in saying their "prayers". They declared that the element of doubt and dilly-dalliance in faith was entirely due to the misconceived theories of some of these so-called Western scholars whose theories had been adopted as gospel truth.

Q: What is the verdict of Science on Man; and why this conflict between Science and Religion on this score?

A: In my book, "Origin of Man", I have endeavored to explain what is dubious and what is proved according to scientific findings. I have also dealt with the theories formerly supported by scholars, but now their very basis is being demolished and proved to be without sound scientific footing. In 1851, Darwin published his first book, "Origin of Species". In it he has pointed out that "All animals can procreate amongst themselves", but he did not take the trouble to demonstrate and prove scientifically his view that the "Genealogy of Man" extends up to monkey.

Q: Then who is responsible for propounding this frivolous theory?

A: The fact is that some other people metamorphosing and without statements digesting his theories, assigned wrong statements to Darwin, which comprised the assumption that "Man has evolved from apes". Nevertheless, it is also true that Darwin did not care to contradict such false notions assigned to him as it was in this connection and on this topic that confrontation occurred between the supporters of Darwin and the Clergy, where both the parties roundly abused and maligned each other. That is why it is now essential that a line of demarcation should always be drawn between the results of scientific investigations and arbitrary views of scholars like Darwin.

Q: By such scientific discourses, debates and discussions even Scriptures, are exposed to scientific test resulting in exposing their errors and pin-pointing their weaknesses. As such, may we inquire if you have some across any such anomalies in the Quran, i.e. where its expositions and explanations are in contrast to scientific findings?

A: The Scriptures of non-Muslims have been copied and passed on from generation to generation and through different personalities. The oldest document of this nature is "Jehovah", which was written some time during 9th Century A.D. This book, although not voluminous, is still the most comprehensive document of its kind. The second book (Sacrodotal), although generally treated as Preface to the Bible, came to light in 600 B.C. It deals with the creation of universe and the appearance of Man on earth and the stories narrating the events following it. The Bible comes thereafter, but the books of the "New Testament" do not throw much light on the problem of Man. They repeat the statements of the Old Testament as adopted by St. Luke. Quran made its appearance six hundred years after Jesus and furnished valuable material on Man and his creation which was (and still is) totally lacking in the Old as well as the New Testaments and other Scriptures. What is more important is this context is that unlike the Bible's Old and New Testaments, Quran is completely free from errors and interpolations.

Q: In your opinion, what are the main causes of such plentiful errors in other Scriptures?

A: The compilers of the Holy Scriptures, in their vanity, presumed to have compiled them on the basis of heavenly revelations. But all their efforts were the echoes of their period resounding the thoughts prevalent in that particular environment. They presented the conception of Man and the phenomenon of his creation as if enunciated by God Himself, though it merely reflected the traditions the rite and the perceptions well known and prevalent at that time. This fact is admitted unanimously by all the exegetes of the Bible, be they Roman Catholics or Protestants.

Q: Does the church also admit this fact and subscribe to this view?

A: Yes Sir. The church did accept this truth which was incorporated in the proceedings on the occasion of the second Vatican conference, which was held to declare the "Revolutionary Nature of Old and New Testaments". They admitted that some parts of these Bibles are defective and contradictory in purport.

Q: What are your views about the Quran in this behalf?

A: Now this is a matter of entirely a different nature. All scholars of the Quran are unanimous that the Quran is the "Word of God" as revealed to His Last Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.) through Gabriel (The Angel of Revelation). I have studied the Book (Quran) very carefully and have not come across one single instance of scientific fallacy any where in it. On the contrary, I have felt that the (higher) truths and realities inherent in Quranic Text have been, throughout the history of 1400 years, beyond the comprehension of ordinary human beings which in itself, is positive proof that the Quran is the Word of God and it is (at places) beyond intellectual potential of mortal man; be he an excellent scholar or philosopher of the highest caliber, who is not always able to explain the inherent realities of nature as revealed in the Quran. What obviously conflicts with scientific truth is the assumption of the Bible that although life erupted in the form of various species, which have endured, there has been no evolution or improvement in their functions. On the other hand according to the Quran, Man has transgressed through gigantic changes in the course of the entire history of humanity. I felt it very necessary to inform the Christians of the world of this very serious discrepancy in the Bible. As it happen to be impartial, truthful and very outspoken in my studies, I have been repeatedly called upon from time to time to express my views regarding these matters before distinguished gatherings. On all such occasions, I have always dealt with the subject from the scientific point of view, ignoring the ecclesiastic or theological context. Whatever has appeared to be dubious or fit for further investigation, I have tried to put it on the touchstone of criticism and have not allowed to pass it unchallenged.

Q: Have you embraced Islam?

A: I wanted to make it quite clear in the very beginning that even before I learnt the first letter of Bismillah, I was convinced that God was unique and all- powerful and when God guided me to undertake a study of the Quran, my inner soul cried out that Al- Quran was the Word of God revealed to his Last Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.).
In my book "Quran, Bible and Science," I have mentioned these facts and the book has met with instant success in the entire Christian world. In this book I have devoted myself to discuss all problems from purely academic angle, rather than that of faith or belief which would have revealed only my personal convictions. This was because I desired to be treated by the world as an academician rather than a theologian. About my faith and belief, God knows what is in one's heart. I am convinced that if I identify myself with any creed, people will invariably dub me as one belonging to such and such group and feel that whatever I say or do, I do so from only the angle of such and such creed group. I know my fellow beings very well and understand their mentality only too well. I wanted to assure them that all my pronouncements are based on scientific knowledge and not on any religious dogmas.

Q: This is O.K., but since you have referred to God's complete awareness with what is in one's heart, may we ask what is your opinion about human heart?

A: Heart is not an apparent and perceptible organ of the body. It is the abode of faith and source of eternal light.

Q: What are your views on Islamic mission and its future in the west?

A: The best method is to approach the people through in their own language. I am using the world language in its broadest sense, i.e. comprehensive of all the factors which go to make any language complete and expressive of peoples' views and beliefs. The principles and the regulations towards which you are inviting their attention, should be presented in the style with which you are familiar and which is popular among them. In my book "Quran Bible and Science", I have adopted a new style to acquaint the readers with Quranic truths and to understand the intrinsic value of al-Quran. This unprejudiced and impartial viewpoint of mine gave an impetus to the wide circulation in my books. Firstly, I tried to find out the central point of attention of the Christians and the style that appeals to their common sense. Thereafter I achieved this success. After the publication of these books I received a number of letters from great academicians and research scholars as well as commoners in which they expressed their interest in my study of Al-Quran and appreciated it. They felt satisfied with my views about the Bible and confirmed the fallacies pointed out by me. I once entertained some Christians at home, in which they expressed their astonishment over the literature I produced regarding Islam and inquired the names of exegesis to acquire correct information about it.

Q: What are your activities now?

A: We are now trying to produce a film on "Science, the Quran and the Origin of Man" as a matter of fact I have deep friendly relations with Malaysia. The provincial branch of "Dawa-Islamia" has passed a resolution to produce a film on the Quran and the director of the producing company visited Paris to prepare a plan for it. This film is to be in Technicolor. The duration of its presentation is fifty-five minutes being devoted to the Quran and the history of the facts related to it, the verses of the Quran are depicted in this film. Thus it is of great importance. Six hundred thousand dollars have been collected to produce this film. The preparation of this film has already been started. To begin with it will be produced in five languages, and then it will be extended up to ten. The first print will be in English, then Arabic and French, and thereafter in other languages. It will be circulated throughout the world.
